NEXT OF KIN (2014) is a photography installation of twenty-six images which were made by Cheryl Schurgers while she resided at her parental house during tense family circumstances.
It features portraits of her mother, her sister and herself in which their different identities are intertwined along with a studies of a plaster cast of her own body.
Because the photos were taken in different places in the house and garden of her childhood, the house also becomes an important character in the narrative. NEXT OF KIN is a play between intimacy and distance in which the artist’s personal background becomes a fictional tale.
