Cheryl Schurgers

Visual artist building a personal archive through performative photography

Selected works from an expanding series

Biography

Cheryl Schurgers (1991) is a Dutch visual artist based in Amsterdam, working in performative photography. She received a BFA in Photography from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2014.

Since the age of fifteen, she has positioned herself within the frame as both subject and author. She creates carefully composed, cinematic images that explore identity, representation, and the passage of time.

Her work forms an evolving visual archive: deeply personal, yet resonant with broader questions about how we construct and preserve the self.

Using photography as both method and medium, she reflects on the human urge to record, categorize, and hold on to fleeting moments, inviting viewers into a space of introspection and quiet recognition.

Set within intimate or enclosed environments that function as psychological stages, her works examine how the body is seen, how identity is constructed, and how intimacy can both connect and confine.
