Cheryl Schurgers (1991) is a Dutch visual artist based in Amsterdam, working in performative photography. She graduated from the Photography department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in 2014.
Since the age of fifteen, she has photographed herself, creating an ongoing visual archive in which she is both subject and author. Using the body as material, she creates carefully staged, cinematic images that examine the construction of identity and the passage of time.
Set within intimate, enclosed environments that function as psychological stages, her work explores the tension between vulnerability and control, considering how the self is documented, perceived, and remembered.
